HR Starts with Human

HR Starts with Human

To support a healthy mental world, HR must shift from offering only reactive therapies to proactively managing workplace stressors. HR needs to train managers in mental health literacy, encourage open conversations to eliminate stigma, and offer flexible working arrangements.
Here is how HR must evolve to foster a supportive mental environment:
1. Build Psychological Safety
  • Normalize Conversations: End the stigma by holding workshops where employees can openly discuss mental wellness.
  • Lead by Example: Encourage leadership to share their own well-being struggles to make employees feel safe asking for help.
  • Protect Careers: Ensure employees that seeking mental health support will never harm their job security or promotion opportunities.
2. Focus on Prevention
  • Reduce Overload: Track workload patterns, prevent burnout, and protect rest periods.
  • Assess Risks: Use anonymous surveys to find the root causes of stress, such as unclear roles or toxic behavior
3. Equip Leaders and Managers
  • Train Managers: Give managers the skills to spot early signs of mental distress. Train them to listen without judging and to connect workers to professional support.
  • Provide Clear Resources: Direct staff to confidential, accessible care options through Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).
4. Normalize Flexibility
  • Offer Autonomy: Give employees control over their work hours and locations.
  • Set Boundaries: Respect "right to disconnect" laws and encourage the use of mental health days.
